Most reed switches are 'normally closed' (the switch is closed when the magnet is near the switch.) Most security systems are wired with normally closed reed switches. Normally open switches are a bit more complicated to make, are a bit more expensive, and are normally not used with security systems.

Normally open reed switches are useful for automation tasks. Connect the 507381BW to a 6330 PowerFlash controller and send a command to turn on a light when the garagedoor is open, or connect the 507381BW to home automation controllers such as ActiveHome or HomeVision.
