Speaker level audio interconnects are typically heavier gauge wire (16 gauge and larger) because they carry the power (voltage * current) from the amplifier to the speaker. If the wire is too small, it "resists" the flow of the power to the speaker enough to distort the sound. Standard speaker level connections include 5-way binding posts, banana jacks/plugs, and bare wire clips/clamps.
