When you short the extra contacts together, the thermostat uses the 'night' setting (which could also be an 'away' or 'anti-freeze' setting.) There aretwo basic ways to hook up this thermostat: Run the two wires to a Universal Module. Plug in the Universal Module and you can send X-10 commands from any X-10 controller (including a telephone transponder) to operate the thermostat. And the control unit, which goes back by your HVAC equipment. The control unit and the thermostat talk over the same wires that your old thermostat used. (4 conductors min.) The control unit has a plug-in power supply and a RS485 connection. The control unit connects to the HVAC equipment where your original thermostat wires connected.
