PLC Compatible Amplifiers, Couplers, Filters, and Surge ProtectorsThis section contains various UPB and X-10 Power Line Carrier (PLC) signal conditioning devices. Proper use of devices such the system amplifier, couplers, and filters insure a strong UPB or X10 signal throughout your home. |
PLC Signal Conditioning DevicesFor a complete guide to troubleshooting PLC, see our book. The system amplifiershould be used if your home is over 2,500 square feet or has sub-panels. It goes in or near the main service panel. The signal bridgegoes in or near the main panel (if not using the system amplifier) and in all sub-panels. The blocking couplergoes in the main panel if external noise is a possibility and you have 200 amp or less service. The signal attenuatoris used in unusual circumstances to clean up the PLC signal by reducing the overall signal (and noise) level, then letting the signal amplifier bring back up only the PLC signal level. The wire-in noise blockis used, at the load, to eliminate noise from offending wired-in devices. It is limited to 5 amps. The plug-in noise blockis used, at the load, to eliminate noise from offending plug-in devices. The noise reduceris used to reduce noise from offending devices. It is not as effective as the noise blocks, but it has no amperage limitation. Many surge protection devices absorb PLC signals. Leviton makes a very good whole-house surge protection devicethat is compatible with PLC signals. |
