PLC Signal Testing Instruments

These devices are extremely useful for troubleshooting PowerLine Carrier (PLC) problems. In order to troubleshoot PLC problems, you must have some idea of the relative signal strengths at various points, and whether electrical noise is interfering with the signal. These devices will tell you the answer to both questions!

Power Line Signal Analyzer
  • Identifies All X-10 Number & Function Codes
  • Displays signal strengths of all incoming codes using an auto-ranging volt-meter.
  • Analyzes AC power line noise.
  • Examines pre-set dim, extended code & extended data commands.
  • Dissects each x-10 code to examine all bits of code.
  • Records i memory up to 190 X-10 codes for later review.

6385
Signal Test Transmitter
The Signal Test Transmitter continuously sends known strength P1 ON, P1 OFF signals when plugged into a standard 120V receptacle. Set a distant receiver to P1 to quickly verify that commands are reaching the receiver and that the receiver is operating correctly. Use the 6385 with the 6386 to measure signal strength and check for electrical interference.

6386
Signal Strength Indicator
The Signal Strength Indicator responds to P1 ON and P1 OFF commands. It shows the received signal strength in increments from 25 millivolts to 2 volts. It also indicates when electrical noise is interfereing with the signal. Use the 6386 alone to test that controllers (transmitters) are sending a proper (2 volts or greater) signal. Use the 6386 in conjunction with the 6385 to measure the signal propogation throughout a home.

EL-ESM1
X-10 Signal Meter
  • Line Voltage: 120 VAC, 60Hz
  • Sensitivity: 100mV to 5.0V max. +/- 10%
  • Frequency Detected: 120 kHz +/- 10%
  • X10 codes validated on: Start Code, Alternating Bit Patterns, Total Bit Count
  • Size: Meter: 2.5" w. x 2.5" h. x 1.0" d.
  • Size: Transformer: 2.0" w. x 2.5" h. x 1.7" d.
This economical X-10 Signal Meter is half the price of most test tools on the market, yet can do 90% of what the more expensive models do, including answering questions like:

  • Is there an X-10 signal present?

  • Is the X-10 signal too low?

  • Is there noise interference?

  • Is the signal corrupted?

For a whole house test, use the X-10 transmitter of your choice to continuously send an X-10 transmission. (i.e. ELK Magic Module, ELK-MM443). Then move the ESM1 to various AC receptacles located around the house to verify the signal.

The ESM1 listens to your power line, and displays signal strength of any activity at the X-10 frequency. It also measures and displays any signal between 100mV and 5 volts (The maximum specified X-10 signal strength). The bar graph LED readout shows signal strength level, while the “X-10 Good” light indicates whether valid X-10 traffic is being received. The ESM1 is the best value choice for test tools.
